What is Hagi Yaki/Ware?
Hagi ware, also known as Hagi Yaki, is a type of porcelain primarily produced in Hagi city, Yamaguchi prefecture. Its charm lies in its simplicity, with minimal decoration, allowing the clay's unique features to shine through. Each Hagi ware piece is distinct due to the clay's cracks and color changes during firing, known as "the seven disguises" (Nanabake).
The design of the notched foot, inspired by the Korean Joseon dynasty, is a prominent feature in Hagi ware tea bowls, adding character to the otherwise unadorned pottery. Hagi ware is crafted from a special clay blend of three soils, offering excellent heat retention.
Its history traces back to the arrival of Korean potters in Hagi during the late 16th century, after Japan's military invasion of Korea. These skilled craftsmen played a pivotal role in the development of various pottery styles, including Hagi ware, alongside Satsuma and Arita.
