About Shino ware
Shino ware is a type of Japanese ceramic ware that is known for its rich, white feldspar glaze, which sometimes has a subtle pink hue. The white glaze often features plant and other naturalistic motifs that are drawn in iron glazes. Shino pottery was produced at various kilns throughout southern Japan, including Okaya, Onada, Gotomachi, and Kujiri in the northwestern part of Toki. Each kiln had its own unique style, but all used a fine, white potting clay covered with thick feldspar glazes. Shino ware comes in a range of colors, including white, red, rose, neriagede (a combination of colors), and gray. The warm gray color of the gray Shino variety is achieved by coating the piece with an iron slip, scratching in designs, then covering it with a feldspar glaze and firing it in reducing flames.
