What is Shino Ware (Shino yaki)? Shino ware is a distinguished type of Japanese pottery from the Mino Province, famous for being the first white-glazed pottery in Japan. It is celebrated for its thick, feldspar-rich glaze that often develops small pinholes or "nest holes" (su ana) and a texture resembling citron skin (yuzuhada). The glaze often reveals beautiful reddish-brown scorch marks known as "hi iro" where the iron in the clay interacts with the fire, giving each piece a warm, unique character highly prized in the tea ceremony.
