Handmade and handpainted Kutani Yaki porcelain pot from the Meiji Period, featuring five large panels with cranes, birds, peonies, cherry blossoms, and a poem set against a warm gilt ground in Satsuma style. The ribbed body has a wire and wound curve handle. Used traditionally as a Yuhiya for cooling and sharing tea; also suitable as a sake pourer or creamer.

A Yuhiya (also called a fairness mug or tea geisha) is a traditional Japanese vessel used to cool boiled water to the correct temperature before pouring tea, and to distribute tea evenly among cups. This piece can also serve as a sake pourer or creamer.

Authenticity Note

Signed in iron-red kanji characters on the base, indicating production at the Kutani kilns in Kaga prefecture during the Meiji Period.

Care Note

Hand wash only. Do not microwave or dishwash. Antique porcelain; handle with care.
