Hagi yaki stoneware tea bowl by Matsuno Ryuji (born 1951) of Ryokuei Kiln, Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Features the characteristic soft, milky variegated glaze and rustic textured body of high-quality Hagi ware. Comes in its original signed wooden tomobako box with the artist's calligraphy and seal on the lid.

Buyer Note

Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki) is a traditional Japanese stoneware originating in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is prized for its soft, milky glaze and the way the clay absorbs tea over time, gradually changing the glaze color. This quality, known as one of Hagi ware's 'seven disguises,' is considered a mark of character rather than a flaw.

Authenticity Note

Artist's calligraphy and black seal stamp appear on the tomobako box lid. Black stamp is associated with the Ryokuei Kiln attribution to Matsuno Ryuji.

Care Note

Hand wash only with warm water. Do not use soap on the unglazed foot. The glaze will naturally deepen in color with continued tea use, which is considered desirable in Hagi ware.
