A Japanese Meiji Era Hakari Tenbin hanging balance scale from Osaka. The body is brass rather than the more common hardwood, and the set includes the original counter balance weight and wooden storage case. Items to be weighed were hung on the hook; the balance weight was slid along the bar until level, and the reading was taken from that position.

Please review all photos and video for actual color, size, texture, and vintage details before purchase.

Buyer Note

The Hakari Tenbin is a traditional Japanese steelyard-style hanging balance scale used by traveling merchants. The user holds the scale at the pivot point, hangs the item on the hook, and slides the counter weight along the bar until balanced. The reading is taken from the position of the counter weight on the graduated bar.

Authenticity Note

Brand listed as Yamato per original source data. No additional maker marks or certificates documented.

Care Note

Wipe gently with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on the brass body to preserve the natural patina.

Notes:
Great condition. Age-appropriate patina on brass body. Original wood case intact. Please review all photos for full condition details.
